Formally known as the "Navigation Pavilion," Casa dos Barcos is a piece of living Azorean heritage. Formerly the pavilion of the Mata-Jardim José do Canto estate, it was commissioned in the mid-19th century by the Canto family, among the most influential aristocratic families of São Miguel. Inspired by Nordic Anglo-Flemish architecture, it stands within the magnificent garden designed by renowned French landscape architect Barrillet-Deschamps, and its distinctive stepped gable facade reflected in the waters of Lagoa das Furnas has become one of the most iconic images of the Azores.
Situated on the largest island of the Azores, São Miguel, the house sits at the water's edge of Lagoa das Furnas. Ancient camellia rows bloom December to April, and the Vale dos Fetos fern valley lies just beyond the garden gate.
